IT'S ALL ABOUT GRIEF. THE SENSE OF LOSTNESS. LOSSES.
RESILIENCY & BROKENNESS. LIFE, THOUGH MINUSCULE AT TIMES, THAT REMAINS & GROWS EVEN IN ARID & DESOLATE, DISTANT PLACES. STEADFASTNESS.
IT'S ABOUT CONTINUING. WAITING & BEING STILL.
TETHERED YET DIVIDED.
LOOKING FOR HOME IN A PLACE THAT WILL NEVER BE YET IN MANY WAYS, IT ALREADY IS & ALWAYS WAS.
LIFE CAN FEEL AS IF WE'RE BARELY TRUDGING THROUGH
WHEN WE ARE IN FACT BEING CARRIED.
IT'S JUST THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE. THAT'S ALL IT IS.
YET, THAT IS SO MUCH.
THOUGH MY GRIEF & MY PARTICULAR SEARCH FOR THE TRUE & LOVELY IS SPECIFIC TO ME, ESPECIALLY DURING YEARS WHEN SO MUCH HAS UNRAVELED. MORPHED OR GONE AWAY ENTIRELY I DO NOT BELIEVE I'M ALONE IN SEARCHING. I BELIEVE THAT IT IS A SHARED EXPERIENCE.
THIS IS MY FIRST DISPATCH FROM ACROSS THE DIVIDE.
DISPATCH, VOL 1
LIFE IS INDEED VERY DIFFICULT & LIFE CAN SEEM UNLIVABLE AT TIMES. BUT EVEN FROM REMOTE COORDINATES, THERE IS BEAUTY & LOVELINESS TO BEHOLD. GOODNESS TO TAKE IN.
THERE IS LIGHT. OVERWHELMING LIGHT. THERE IS LIFE, EVEN IF DISORIENTING. IT IS DIFFICULT & IT IS GOOD. TO BE A HUMAN IS TO LIVE, CONSTANTLY, THE GREAT BOTH, AND.
Photographed in Dare County on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, “A Light Omniscient” for me, is an acknowledgement of the overwhelming and dominant light of the world. Unmoved and towering, omnipresent and omniscient, and lighting the way home.

Headed north through the Sheephole Valley Wilderness in California, Brennan and I pulled over to watch as a dust storm descended on, and eventually consumed this mountainscape. A hazy hazing of sorts. As with the disorientation of recent years, the hazing did eventually cease, though the scape was changed. Seemingly unchanged from where I was seeing it, anyone standing on those ridges when the storm raged would have a different story to tell.

Seems to me, there were so many different experiences of recent years. Many of the folks in my realm never saw what the big deal was. No losses that seemed to matter much. No uprooting, dissolving, or wondering about a way forward… just mere annoyances. Others lost so much. Family and friends lost to the virus or issues brought on by the disruptions, and others lost to ideological divisions. Jobs, homes, and resources gone. Communities and houses of faith split. Layers of confusion and loss. My family? We participated in the great reshuffling. Needing to sell our house to compensate for what was lost when my work went away, we moved east to a small town on the coastal plain of North Carolina. Nowhere near the size of other migrations, and with less and less communal bandwidth to grieve these moves, in some ways, they seemed to fly under the radar… unnoticed by those not heavily affected. This photo was taken in Dare County, North Carolina.

It’s all of us, right? Filled with multitudes too weighty for these exteriors to shoulder. It’s all so much, yet incredibly mundane as well. Layers and layers of consistency and inconsistency swirling within these vessels. If we continuously allow ourselves to reduce one another, we will not make it. We are not solely our worst thoughts or behaviors, but a conglomeration of lived experiences… loses and victories. Pain we’ve received. Pain we’ve inflicted. Every relationship and encounter up until this moment, as well as the futures we look to with exhilaration or dread. All of these things and more. Dylan wasn’t an outlier. We all contain multitudes. Daylight faded to twilight and back again. Over and over. A yesterday seemed like a tomorrow. Some weeks felt like a month and some months seemed like a week. If not for these public journals of social media that so many of us keep, I couldn’t tell you with any degree of accuracy when what happened over the past few years. It’s all a jumbled mess, in my memory and the now. This image was made on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

The story goes that Paul Simon ripped the title for his 1972 song, “Mother and Child Reunion” from the menu at a Chinese restaurant. The chicken-and-egg dish had little to do with his actual song, or with this scene from Dare County, North Carolina. Even still, I’m reminded of how sweet so many of the reunions have been, after so many of us spent months and years apart from one another. So much distance. So much aloneness. And I believe that there are even sweeter reunions to be had with those we’ve said goodbye to. These temporary separations and griefs, as disorienting as they are, are only that. Momentary. I’d be okay if none of us ever go through anything like this again. But if we do, I feel certain that Rhymin’ Simon’s catalog will remain a deep well from which I’ll be able to find cool water.

It’s kind of humorous, but this scene from Joshua Tree National Park kept making me think of the Old Testament story about Joshua fighting the battle of Jericho. Actually, it reminds me more of Mahalia Jackson singing of how “Joshua fit the battle of Jericho,” causing the walls to come tumbling down. Same story, but the song is a real earworm.

Photographed in the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes of California, “You Remain” is perhaps the most overtly spiritual piece within this collection. In the depths of the deserts, underneath the scorching sun and parched on every front, we are not alone. Even in the midst of the arid places, life remains. God remains. When every single harsh condition of our environment is screaming that life should not grow here, it indeed does. But not without an abrasion. A fight. There are a million seemingly unseen things happening all at once in order for life to remain. But it can. Deserts are not wastelands, and we are not forgotten.

There’s an exchange that occurs while spending time with others. There are subtle reminders given, merely by the exchanging of ideas, that can remind us of who we are. It occurs when language is shared, and our words are bounced back to us through the response of others. It helps tell us who we are and whose we are. This feedback enables us to grow and change. When that goes missing, whether by our own choosing or by way of outside circumstances, it can become very easy to get lost or become overly self-assured of our own perspectives. We need one another to remind ourselves of who we are. We need each other. Photographed in Death Valley, California.

It’s always both and, isn’t it? Rain on the horizon in one place, while the warm, serene rays break through the clouds elsewhere. I remember days in the ICU with my daughter Pearl… days when she would be rounding a corner, miraculously improving while discharge papers were being prepared. And just on the other side of the wall, in the exact same pod, there was a family who was having the absolute worst day any parent can ever imagine. It happened all the time. Tears of joy for this one, and guttural screams for the other. After years and years of resounding joy, we did eventually become the other family. Lost in grief and unknowing of how to walk the unimaginable road of burying our daughter. Taken in Nags Head, NC.

We are incredibly tethered, perhaps more than at any other time in human history, largely due to our hyper engagement with these screened devices. And the divisions and remote existences we are prone to seem to me to be equally as prominent, perhaps due to the exact same thing. Maybe obvious to anyone familiar with the Outer Banks of North Carolina, this image is of Highway 12… a road that itself, is constantly under threat of being taken down by storms and nature. It takes a herculean effort just to keep it traversable.

A tip of the hat toward the writing of C.S. Lewis, a willing companion in times of confusion. It’s a title I kept using during the printing and framing process and eventually it just stuck around. Photographed in Amboy, California.

It was something akin to an “innocence lost.” That feeling that no matter how rose-colored the viewing glass had previously been, something was shattering… changing most everything. It’s been a raw string of years, and perspective can be hard to come by. We’ve witnessed sides of ourselves and one another that in times past may have been hidden, quietened, or tinted differently. Not all is lost, as so much of the brokenness within ourselves, individually and collectively, needed to have light shown on it. There has been a dramatic upending nonetheless. It can be so disorienting. Storm tossed, wondering if your roots are strong enough to maintain, yet feeling incredibly exposed. Vulnerable. Mere existence can feel impossible, and a welcoming shelter hard to come by. The winds of grief can ravage. They have their way. And you just wait. You go through it. There’s no way around it and it is better that way. The storms, they’re doing something. It’s a work that needs to happen, though I’ve not yet wrapped my head around the reasons why.
